Gotch, associate director of music, presents "Pieces of Eight" a recital on the Sipe organ and Steinway piano featuring the work of Schubert, Rimsky-Korsakoff, Debussy, Couperin, Bizet, Messiaen, Donizetti and Sowerby. May 4: As a part of the Masterworks concerts, on Sunday, May 4at 7 p.m., the FUMC Chancel Choir will join with twenty-three members of the Phoenix Symphony, David Gotch and soloists, to present Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms. Composed in 1965, this work of three movements features a setting in Hebrew of one complete Psalm (Psalm 23), along with a verse or more of six others. The young shepherd-king David is brought to life in the lyrical second movement in which a boy soprano, in our concert, Evan Pensis, chants the Psalm 23 to the accompaniment of a harp. The second half of the concert, the choir will be singing René Clausen’s Psalm 100, with double piano and xylophone, and Clap Your Hands (Psalm 47) also by René Clausen. The choir will close with T’filat HaDerech a Hebrew blessing. Tickets are not required for concerts and recitals; admission is free. Everyone in the community is invited to attend.	Music Music is a big part of the worship and fellowship ministries of First Church. From choir concerts and organ recitals, to the processional hymns at our formal worship services, to the hand-clapping rhythms of our praise band, to sing-a-longs at all church camp, to the ringing of the chimes several times throughout the day, music fills ours lives with praise. God calls us to make a joyful noise to the Lord. The Celebration Band The Celebration Band is our group of instrumentalists and vocalists who lead music at the 9:00 contemporary service. They rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. Contact Dr. Corley or Nancy Copeland at the church office for more information on joining this worship team. New instrumentalists are always needed. The Chancel Choir The Chancel Choir, our largest musical group, praises God each Sunday morning at the 11 a.m. service. The choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. The Chancel Chamber Players The Chancel Chamber Players bring sacred instrumental music to the church community of First Church. This ensemble gives both non-professional and professional musicians an opportunity to serve God through their instrumental gifts. Rehearsals for this group are Wednesday evenings from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. Rejoicing Handbells Our favorite ding-a-lings at the church are the members of the Handbell Choir. Sharing special music throughout the year the hand bell ensemble is a dedicated group of ringers at all levels. Children's Music Programs Children's music programs include choirs for preschool, young elementary aged children, and older children and youth. The Little Shepherds Choir, four years through kindergarten, rehearse Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m. The Godsingers, third grade through sixth grade also rehearse Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m. The children and youth choirs sing on a regular basis during our worship services. Ensemble and Solo Music Solo and ensemble music is used most frequently for special seasonal services and in the summer months.
